I’m from New Zealand, so I went through the whole process of training myself, being a swimmer, and then developing into a coach/teacher. I love it. It’s awesome.
I have an AUSTSWIM teaching licence, which is Water Safety and Swimming. I have a CPR qualification and I also have a blue card so I can work with children. These are the mandatory qualifications that you must have to get started. You can have different specialisations later on like disability, inclusion, and preschool babies.
There’s so many to pick from! I just love working with kids. I think teaching a life skill is so important. You get so many different kinds of kids. Some of them can be funny or even a little bit nervous if it’s their first lesson. But my favourite part is definitely working with kids.
I think the cost of courses and qualifications could be a misconception. It may be a little bit more than some people think; however, it is well worth it in the long run. You can pay it off quite quickly.
I think the attributes of a great swim teacher include being outgoing and really friendly, having good customer service skills, and being willing to learn.
Honestly, just do it. It is the best thing I ever got into and I love it. If I was sitting down with someone, I would say, have you heard about the rewarding job of swim teaching? It’s fun, it’s an inclusive team environment. You obviously teach on your own but it is awesome getting to know different styles of kids, even getting to know different families and make new relationships. It’s a great networking experience. You will absolutely love it.
